परिचय

हिंदू धर्म में देवी दुर्गा के नौ रूपों की आराधना नवरात्रि के नौ दिनों में की जाती है। इनमें सातवें दिन की देवी हैं माता कालरात्रि। इनका नाम सुनते ही एक रहस्यमयी और शक्तिशाली स्वरूप की छवि मन में उभरती है। माता कालरात्रि का रूप जितना भयावह है, उनका हृदय उतना ही कोमल और भक्तवत्सल है। वे सभी प्रकार के भयों और अज्ञान के अंधकार को नष्ट करने वाली देवी हैं।

माता कालरात्रि की उत्पत्ति की कथा

जब दानवों और असुरों का अत्याचार चरम पर पहुँच गया था, तब देवताओं ने देवी दुर्गा से रक्षा की प्रार्थना की। राक्षस शुंभ-निशुंभ और उनका सेनापति चंड-मुंड बहुत शक्तिशाली हो चुके थे। तब देवी दुर्गा ने अपने क्रोध से एक अत्यंत विकराल रूप धारण किया, जो काल की तरह भयानक और रात की तरह काली थी। इस रूप से ही माता कालरात्रि की उत्पत्ति हुई।

एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार, जब राक्षस रक्तबीज को मारना असंभव हो गया — क्योंकि उसकी रक्त की हर बूंद से एक नया राक्षस जन्म लेता था — तब माता ने अपने भयंकर रूप में प्रकट होकर उसका वध किया। उन्होंने अपने रक्तपान से रक्तबीज के रक्त को धरती पर गिरने से पहले ही पी लिया, जिससे नए राक्षस उत्पन्न नहीं हो सके।

 माता कालरात्रि का स्वरूप

माता कालरात्रि का स्वरूप अत्यंत भयानक है। उनका रंग काजल की तरह काला है, लंबे खुले बाल, तीन आँखें और उनका शरीर अग्नि की तरह चमकता है। वे गर्दभ (गधे) पर सवारी करती हैं। उनके चार हाथ होते हैं—दो हाथों में वे अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण करती हैं और दो हाथ अभय और वरद मुद्रा में होते हैं।

उनका यह रूप इस बात का प्रतीक है कि वे अंधकार और नकारात्मकता को नष्ट करने वाली हैं। वे दिखने में भले ही विकराल हों, लेकिन भक्तों को भयमुक्त करने वाली और अत्यंत कृपालु माता हैं।

महत्व और उपासना विधि

माता कालरात्रि को तांत्रिक साधनाओं में विशेष महत्व प्राप्त है। इनकी उपासना करने से साधक को सिद्धियाँ प्राप्त होती हैं और सभी प्रकार की नकारात्मक ऊर्जा, बाधाएं और भूत-प्रेत आदि से मुक्ति मिलती है।

नवरात्रि के सातवें दिन माता कालरात्रि की पूजा की जाती है। इस दिन साधक रात्रि को विशेष पूजा करते हैं और उन्हें लाल पुष्प, गुड़ और नारियल अर्पित करते हैं। माता को लौंग और धूप-दीप अत्यंत प्रिय हैं।

मंत्र:
"ॐ कालरात्र्यै नमः"

इस मंत्र का जाप करने से भय और बाधाएं दूर होती हैं तथा आत्मबल में वृद्धि होती है।

Introduction

In Hinduism, nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during the nine days of Navratri. The goddess of the seventh day is Mata Kaalratri. On hearing her name, the image of a mysterious and powerful form emerges in the mind. As terrifying as the form of Mata Kaalratri is, her heart is equally soft and devotee-loving. She is the goddess who destroys all kinds of fears and the darkness of ignorance.

The story of the origin of Mata Kaalratri

When the atrocities of demons and asuras had reached their peak, the gods prayed to Goddess Durga for protection. Demons Shumbh-Nishumbh and their commander Chand-Mund had become very powerful. Then Goddess Durga assumed a very fierce form in her anger, which was as terrifying as time and as black as night. Mata Kaalratri originated from this form.

 According to another legend, when it became impossible to kill the demon Raktbeej – because every drop of his blood was giving birth to a new demon – the Goddess appeared in her fierce form and killed him. She drank Raktbeej’s blood before it fell on the earth, so that no new demons could be born.

Form of Mata Kaalratri

The form of Mata Kaalratri is extremely terrifying. She is black in colour like kaajal, has long open hair, three eyes and her body shines like fire. She rides on a donkey. She has four hands – two of which hold weapons and the other two are in Abhaya and Varada mudra.

This form of hers symbolizes that she is the destroyer of darkness and negativity. Though she may look fierce, she is a very kind mother who frees her devotees from fear.

Importance and method of worship

Mata Kaalratri has special importance in tantric sadhnas.  By worshipping them, the seeker gets siddhis and gets rid of all kinds of negative energies, obstacles and ghosts etc.

Mata Kalratri is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri. On this day, seekers do special worship at night and offer them red flowers, jaggery and coconut. Cloves and incense sticks are very dear to the mother.

Mantra:

"Om Kalratriye Namah"

Chanting this mantra removes fear and obstacles and increases self-confidence.

Conclusion

Mata Kalratri gives us the message that to face fear, we also have to recognize the power within us. Her form shows that sometimes toughness and determination are necessary to end negativity. With the grace of the mother, the seeker moves from darkness to light.
