परिचय
नवरात्रि के आठवें दिन मां दुर्गा के आठवें स्वरूप महागौरी की पूजा की जाती है। मां महागौरी का नाम उनके अत्यंत गौर वर्ण के कारण पड़ा। उनका स्वरूप सौंदर्य, शांति और करुणा का प्रतीक है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि मां महागौरी की पूजा से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और भक्त को शुद्धता तथा मानसिक शांति प्राप्त होती है।

जन्म कथा
पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार, मां पार्वती ने भगवान शिव को पति रूप में पाने के लिए कठोर तप किया था। उन्होंने हिमालय की पर्वतीय गुफाओं में हजारों वर्षों तक उपवास और कठिन तपस्या की। इस दौरान उनका शरीर पूरी तरह काला हो गया। उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने उन्हें स्वीकार किया, और गंगाजल से स्नान कराते ही उनका शरीर अत्यंत उज्ज्वल, उजला और सुंदर हो गया। उसी रूप को महागौरी कहा गया।

कई कथाओं में यह भी कहा गया है कि शुंभ-निशुंभ नामक राक्षसों के आतंक से देवताओं को बचाने के लिए देवी ने यह रूप धारण किया था। मां महागौरी का स्वरूप शांत और कोमल है, लेकिन वह भक्तों की रक्षा के लिए रौद्र रूप भी धारण कर सकती हैं।

मां महागौरी का स्वरूप

महागौरी का वर्ण पूर्णतः श्वेत है, जैसे चांदी या हिम। उनके चार हाथ हैं। एक हाथ में त्रिशूल, दूसरे में डमरू, एक हाथ वर मुद्रा में और एक अभय मुद्रा में होता है। वे सफेद वस्त्र धारण करती हैं और सफेद वृषभ (बैल) पर सवार होती हैं। उनका यह स्वरूप शुद्धता और पवित्रता का प्रतीक है।

महत्व और लाभ
मां महागौरी की पूजा से जीवन की नकारात्मक ऊर्जा समाप्त होती है। वे अपने भक्तों को सुख-शांति, वैवाहिक जीवन में स्थायित्व, सौंदर्य और मानसिक संतुलन प्रदान करती हैं। कुंवारी कन्याओं को अच्छे वर की प्राप्ति के लिए इनकी आराधना करने की विशेष मान्यता है।

पूजा विधि

मां को सफेद फूल, सफेद मिठाई और दूध से बने प्रसाद चढ़ाना उत्तम माना जाता है।

उन्हें चावल, सफेद वस्त्र और शंख अर्पित करना शुभ होता है।

मां को “ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः” मंत्र से पूजें।

कन्या पूजन भी इस दिन विशेष फलदायी होता है।

Introduction
Mahagauri, the eighth form of Maa Durga, is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri. Maa Mahagauri got her name because of her extremely fair complexion. Her form is a symbol of beauty, peace and compassion. It is believed that by worshipping Maa Mahagauri, all sins are destroyed and the devotee gets purity and mental peace.

Birth story
According to mythological belief, Maa Parvati did a rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. She fasted and did rigorous penance for thousands of years in the mountain caves of the Himalayas. During this time her body became completely black. Pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva accepted her, and as soon as she bathed in Ganga water, her body became extremely bright, fair and beautiful. That form was called Mahagauri.

It is also said in many stories that the Goddess took this form to save the gods from the terror of demons named Shumbh-Nishumbh.  The form of Maa Mahagauri is calm and gentle, but she can also assume a fierce form to protect her devotees.

Form of Maa Mahagauri

The complexion of Mahagauri is completely white, like silver or snow. She has four hands. One hand holds a trident, the other a damru, one hand is in Var Mudra and one in Abhaya Mudra. She wears white clothes and rides on a white Vrishabha (bull). This form of her is a symbol of purity and holiness.

Significance and benefits

Worship of Maa Mahagauri eliminates negative energy from life. She provides happiness and peace, stability in married life, beauty and mental balance to her devotees. There is a special belief that unmarried girls should worship her to get a good groom.

Worship method

It is considered best to offer white flowers, white sweets and prasad made of milk to the mother.

It is auspicious to offer rice, white clothes and conch to her.

 Worship the mother with the mantra "Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah".

Kanya pujan is also very fruitful on this day.

Conclusion
Maa Mahagauri is not only the goddess of peace and purity, but she is also the mother who removes troubles and fulfills wishes. If one meditates on her with devotion on this holy occasion of Navratri, then all the obstacles in life are removed and happiness and prosperity is attained.
