Navaratri, the nine-night festival, is dedicated to Goddess Shailputri in which nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. The first day of this great festival is dedicated to Goddess Shailputri. Shailputri is the first form of Goddess Durga and she got her name because she is the daughter of Himalaya. 'Shail' means mountain and 'putri' means daughter.

Appearance of Goddess Shailputri

The appearance of Goddess Shailputri is very gentle and charming. She rides on a Vrishabha (bull), holds a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left hand. This form of her reflects her deep connection with nature. She is a symbol of peace, perseverance and strength.

Mythology

According to mythology, Goddess Shailputri was Sati in her previous birth, who was the daughter of Daksha Prajapati and the wife of Lord Shiva.  When Daksha Prajapati organized a yagna and did not invite Lord Shiva, Sati, saddened by her husband's insult, immolated herself in the yagna fire. In the next birth, she was born as the daughter of Himalaya and married Lord Shiva.

Significance of Shailputri Puja

The worship of Maa Shailputri on the first day of Navratri has special significance. Devotees gain peace, prosperity, and strength by worshipping her. It is believed that worshipping her calms the mind, removes fears, and brings stability in life. Maa Shailputri is a symbol of nature, so her worship also shows respect and love for nature.

Puja Vidhi

On the first day of Navratri, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Then, they install the idol or picture of Maa Shailputri by spreading a red cloth on a pedestal. She is offered red flowers, roli, rice, and sweets.  The story of Maa Shailputri is recited and the mantra "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Shailputryai Namah" is chanted. Finally, Aarti is performed and Prasad is distributed.
