मौसम एवं जलवायु 

किसी स्थान के वायुदाब, ताप, आर्द्रता, मेघ, वर्षा, पवन प्रवाह आदि तत्वों को जलवायु तथा मौसम के तत्व कहते हैं। मौसम तथा जलवायु में अन्तर है। वे वायुमण्डलीय दशाएं जो एक निश्चित लघु अवधि में किसी क्षेत्र विशेष में पायी जाती हैं, उन्हें मौसम (Weather) कहते हैं। अर्थात् मौसम किसी स्थान विशेष की अल्पकालीन दशाओं का योग होता है। मौसम सदैव बदलता रहता है। अन्य शब्दों में कहें तो मौसम वायुमण्डल को क्षणिक अवस्था है, जबकि जलवायु किसी स्थान विशेष के मौसम की औसत दशा को कहते हैं। जलवायु में एक विस्तृत क्षेत्र में दीर्घ काल की वायुमण्डलीय अवस्थाओं का विवरण होता है। इस प्रकार मौसम की । तुलना में जलवायु शब्द का अर्थ बहुत व्यापक है। मोंकहाउस के शब्दों में, “जलवायु वस्तुतः किसी स्थान विशेष की दीर्घकालीन मौसमी दशाओं के विवरण को सम्मिलित करती है।"

विश्व के विभिन्न भागों में भिन्न-भिन्न जलवायु दशाएं पायी जाती हैं। इसका प्रमुख कारण जलवायु को प्रभावित करने वाले कारक हैं, जिनमें अंक्षाशीय स्थिति, समुद्रतट से दूरी, पर्वतों का अवरोध व दिशा, समुद्री धारायें, पवनों की दिशा, समुद्र तल से ऊंचाई, वायु
विक्षोभ आदि प्रमुख हैं।

Weather and climate

 Elements of air pressure, temperature, humidity, cloud, rain, wind flow etc. of a place are called elements of climate and weather. There is a difference in weather and climate. The atmospheric conditions that are found in a particular area in a given short period of time are called Weather. That is, the weather is the sum of the short-term conditions of a particular place. The weather always changes. In other words, the climate is a transient state of the atmosphere, whereas climate is the average state of the weather of a particular place. Climate describes the long-term atmospheric conditions over a wide area. Thus the weather. The meaning of the word climate is very broad in comparison. In Monkhouse's words, "climate virtually incorporates the description of long-term seasonal conditions of a particular place."

 Different climatic conditions are found in different parts of the world. The main reasons for this are the factors affecting the climate, including the partial position, distance from the beach, the barrier and direction of the mountains, the ocean currents, the direction of the winds, the altitude above sea level, the air
 Disturbance etc. are prominent.

कोपेन का जलवायु वर्गीकरण  (KOPPEN'S CLASSIFICATION OF WORLD CLIMATES)  जर्मनी के प्रसिद्ध जलवायु विज्ञानवेत्ता डॉ. ब्लाडिमिर कोपेन ने सर्वप्रथम 1918 में एवं बाद में 1931 में विश्व की जलवायु का वर्गीकरण प्रस्तुत किया। 1936 में इनके वर्गीकरण का अन्तिम संशोधित रूप प्रकाशित हुआ, जिसका आज भी काफी महत्व है। इस वर्गीकरण में कोपेन ने वनस्पति व जैव-जगत पर प्रभाव को विशेष महत्वपूर्ण माना। इसी कारण इसे प्राकृतिक वनस्पति का आनुभाविक वर्गीकरण (Empirical classification) भी कहा जाता है। कोपेन ने बताया कि पौधों के विकास के लिए वर्षा की प्रभावशीलता, वर्षा की मात्रा तथा तापमान का सुचारु रूप से प्राप्त होना परम आवश्यक है। उसने कैन्डोल द्वारा 1874 में प्रस्तुत वनस्पति मण्डलों का अपने जलवायु वर्गीकरण में उपयोग किया। कैन्डोल ने विश्व को 5 मण्डलों में बांटा था-मेगाथर्मल, जीरोफाइट, मेसोथर्मल, माइक्रोथर्मल व हेकिस्टोथर्मल। कोपेन ने जलवायु को पहले 6 भागों में बांटा, जिन्हें अंग्रेजी के बड़े अक्षरों (Capital letters) A, B, C, D, E और H द्वारा प्रदर्शित किया। A-उष्ण कटिबन्धीय या भूमध्यरेखीय आ...

Thornweight's World Climate Classification (THORNTHWAITE'S CLASSIFICATION OF WORLD CLIMATES)  The famous American weatherman Thornwet has described climate classification by classifying it into two distinct parts. The first classification was presented in 1931 and 1933 and the second in 1948. Thornweight later revised its classification in 1955. The two classifications often look alike, but if we look closely, there is a difference between the two. In the classification made in 1933, only plants were considered as a special instrument of meteorology, with the help of which the elements of weather can be known. In the second classification in 1948, plants are considered as only natural means that keep the surface water from evaporating into the atmosphere.  Thornweight has considered the effectiveness of precipitation, thermal efficiency and seasonal distribution of rainfall in the global climate classification. वायुराशियों के  वाताग्र  या सीमान्त (FRONTS OF AIR MASSES) वाताग्र या सीमान्त वह लहरदार एवं विशेष ढाल वाला तल होता है, जहां कि आमने-सामने से दो भिन्न-भिन्न भौतिक लक्षणों वाली वायुराशियां आकर मिलती हैं। ब्लेयर के शब्दों में, “जिस सतह या रेखा के सहारे वायुराशियां पृथक् रहती हैं उसे वाताग्र कहते हैं।" जबकि ट्रिवार्था का कहना है कि “वाताग्र कोई रेखा नहीं होती अपितु पर्याप्त चौड़ाई वाले (5 से 75 किमी) ऐसे क्षेत्र होते हैं जहां से भिन्न स्वभाव वाली वायुराशियां आमने-सामने से आकर अभिसरण (Converge) करती हैं।'' इस प्रकार वाताग्र से आशय उस ढालू सीमा या सीमान्त से है जिसके सहारे दो विपरीत स्वभाव वाली हवायें मिलती हैं। वाताग्र न तो धरातल के ऊपर लम्बवत होता है और न ही धरातल के समानान्तर क्षैतिज होता है। बल्कि वह कुछ कोण पर झुका हुआ होता है। जलवायु विज्ञान में वाताग्र का अत्यधिक महत्व है, क्योंकि ये मौसम की विशिष्ट दशाओं को जन्म देते हैं, जिन्हें चक्रवात, प्रतिचक्रवात कहते हैं। इसीलिये वाताग्र को चक्रवातों व प्रतिचक्रवातों का पलना कहते हैं। (Fronts are cradle of cyclones and anticyclones...
