तूफानों का नामकरण

 विश्व के विभिन्न भागों में प्रतिवर्ष प्रचण्ड तबाही फैलाने वाले तूफानों का नामकरण विश्व मौसम संगठन (W. M. O.) करता है। यह संस्थान 1953 से ही तूफानों के नामों की सूची तैयार करता रहा है। इसने विश्व के समुद्री तूफानों को तीन वर्गों में बांटा है—(i) उत्तरी प्रशान्त महासागर के टाइफून (ii) अटलाण्टिक महासागर के हरिकेन तथा (iii) शेष विश्व के साइक्लोन कहलाते हैं। प्रतिवर्ष अंग्रेजी वर्णमाला के A से 8 तक 21 नाम रखे जाते हैं। तूफान जिस क्रम में आता है, उसी क्रम का उसका नाम होता है। उदाहरण के लिये, अटलाण्टिक के पहले तूफान का नाम एरलिन है, तो आखिरी का नाम विल्मा होगा। समुद्री तूफानों के नामों के छः सेट बनाये हुय हैं, अर्थात् छः वर्ष बाद नामों का वही सेट दुबारा प्रयोग होता है। अत्यधिक विनाशकारी तूफान आने पर उसके नाम को दुबारा काम में नहीं लेते हैं, जैसे विगत वर्षों में आया 'कैटरीना'। पहले 1980 तक तूफानों का नाम केवल महिलाओं के नाम पर रखा जाता था, जैसे—रीटा, सिंडी, हार्वी, लैला, एमिली आदि, किन्तु बाद में इस सूची में पुरुषों के नाम भी जोड़ दिये गये, जैसे-ऑस्कर गार्डन, बिल आदि।

Storm naming

 The World Meteorological Organization (W. M. O.) is named after the storms that cause severe destruction every year in different parts of the world. The institute has been preparing the list of storm names since 1953. It has divided the world's maritime storms into three classes - (i) typhoons of the northern Pacific Ocean (ii) hurricanes of the Atlantic Ocean and (iii) cyclones of the rest of the world. Every year 21 names from A to 8 of the English alphabet are kept. The order in which the storm comes is its name. For example, the name of the first hurricane in the Atlantic is Erlin, while the last will be named Wilma. Six sets of names of storms have been made, that is, the same set of names are used again after six years. Do not use her name again when a highly destructive storm comes, like 'Katrina' which came in the last years. Till 1980, storms were named only after women, such as Rita, Cindy, Harvie, Laila, Emily, etc., but later men were added to the list, such as Oscar Garden, Bill, etc.

Thornweight's World Climate Classification (THORNTHWAITE'S CLASSIFICATION OF WORLD CLIMATES)  The famous American weatherman Thornwet has described climate classification by classifying it into two distinct parts. The first classification was presented in 1931 and 1933 and the second in 1948. Thornweight later revised its classification in 1955. The two classifications often look alike, but if we look closely, there is a difference between the two. In the classification made in 1933, only plants were considered as a special instrument of meteorology, with the help of which the elements of weather can be known. In the second classification in 1948, plants are considered as only natural means that keep the surface water from evaporating into the atmosphere.  Thornweight has considered the effectiveness of precipitation, thermal efficiency and seasonal distribution of rainfall in the global climate classification. वायुराशियों के  वाताग्र  या सीमान्त (FRONTS OF AIR MASSES) वाताग्र या सीमान्त वह लहरदार एवं विशेष ढाल वाला तल होता है, जहां कि आमने-सामने से दो भिन्न-भिन्न भौतिक लक्षणों वाली वायुराशियां आकर मिलती हैं। ब्लेयर के शब्दों में, “जिस सतह या रेखा के सहारे वायुराशियां पृथक् रहती हैं उसे वाताग्र कहते हैं।" जबकि ट्रिवार्था का कहना है कि “वाताग्र कोई रेखा नहीं होती अपितु पर्याप्त चौड़ाई वाले (5 से 75 किमी) ऐसे क्षेत्र होते हैं जहां से भिन्न स्वभाव वाली वायुराशियां आमने-सामने से आकर अभिसरण (Converge) करती हैं।'' इस प्रकार वाताग्र से आशय उस ढालू सीमा या सीमान्त से है जिसके सहारे दो विपरीत स्वभाव वाली हवायें मिलती हैं। वाताग्र न तो धरातल के ऊपर लम्बवत होता है और न ही धरातल के समानान्तर क्षैतिज होता है। बल्कि वह कुछ कोण पर झुका हुआ होता है। जलवायु विज्ञान में वाताग्र का अत्यधिक महत्व है, क्योंकि ये मौसम की विशिष्ट दशाओं को जन्म देते हैं, जिन्हें चक्रवात, प्रतिचक्रवात कहते हैं। इसीलिये वाताग्र को चक्रवातों व प्रतिचक्रवातों का पलना कहते हैं। (Fronts are cradle of cyclones and anticyclones...
