2. सूडान तुल्य या सवन्ना तुल्य जलवायु प्रदेश

 स्थिति एवं विस्तार-सूडान या सवन्ना तुल्य प्रदेश 5 से 22° उत्तरी-दक्षिणी अक्षांशों के मध्य स्थित हैं। इन प्रदेशों का विस्तार अफ्रीका महाद्वीप के सूडान, पूर्वी अफ्रीका का पठार तथा जेम्बेजी बेसिन में, दक्षिणी अमरीका महाद्वीप के गयाना पठार, ब्राजील के पठार तथा उत्तरी आस्ट्रेलिया में है।

जलवायु-सूडान तुल्य प्रदेशों की जलवायु वर्ष भर गरम एवं साधारण आर्द्र होती है। यहां ग्रीष्म ऋतु में औसत तापमान 28° से 33°C रहता है। शीत ऋतु में औसत तापमान 18° से 23°C रहता है। वार्षिक तापान्तर केवल 5° से 10°C रहता है। वर्षा ग्रीष्म ऋतु में होती है। वर्षा का वार्षिक औसत 50 से 160 सेमी है। भूमध्य रेखा के निकटवर्ती भागों में अधिक वर्षा होती है। सुदूर भागों में वर्षा का औसत 50 सेमी ही रह जाता है। वार्षिक वर्षा की मात्रा में पर्याप्त विषमता पायी जाती है, कभी बाढ़ तो कभी सूखे की स्थिति आ जाती है। तापमान में भिन्नता की दृष्टि से यहां तीन मौसम अनुभव किये जाते हैं-(i) शुष्क शीत काल (ii) उष्ण शुष्क मौसम (iii) उष्ण तर मौसम। ये प्रदेश निम्न तथा उच्च वायुदाब से प्रभावित रहते हैं। वर्षाकाल में उष्ण कटिबंधीय तेज चक्रवात आते हैं। प. द्वीप समूह के निकट हरिकेन का प्रभाव रहता

प्राकृतिक वनस्पति–उच्च तापमान और साधारण वर्षा के फलस्वरूप इन प्रदेशों में लम्बी एवं घनी घास मिलती है तथा कहीं-कहीं वृक्ष उग आते हैं। यह प्रदेश घास के मैदानों के लिए विश्व प्रसिद्ध है। इन मैदानों में कहीं-कहीं छोटे-छोटे वृक्ष भी मिलते हैं। अफ्रीका में घास के मैदानों को सवन्ना नाम दिया गया है। इसी आधार पर समस्त जलवायु प्रदेश को सवन्ना तुल्य कहते हैं। वर्षा काल में मोटी और लंबी-लंबी घासें उगती हैं। कम वर्षा वाले क्षेत्रों तथा शुष्क मौसम में छोटी घासें तथा कंटीली वनस्पति मिलती है। वृक्ष प्रायः पर्णपाती होते हैं।

Small trees are also found somewhere in these plains. The grasslands in Africa are named Savanna. On this basis, the entire climate region is called Savanna. Thick and tall grasses grow during the rainy season. Small grasses and thorny vegetation are found in areas with low rainfall and dry season. Trees are often deciduous.

Thornweight's World Climate Classification (THORNTHWAITE'S CLASSIFICATION OF WORLD CLIMATES)  The famous American weatherman Thornwet has described climate classification by classifying it into two distinct parts. The first classification was presented in 1931 and 1933 and the second in 1948. Thornweight later revised its classification in 1955. The two classifications often look alike, but if we look closely, there is a difference between the two. In the classification made in 1933, only plants were considered as a special instrument of meteorology, with the help of which the elements of weather can be known. वायुराशियों के  वाताग्र  या सीमान्त (FRONTS OF AIR MASSES) वाताग्र या सीमान्त वह लहरदार एवं विशेष ढाल वाला तल होता है, जहां कि आमने-सामने से दो भिन्न-भिन्न भौतिक लक्षणों वाली वायुराशियां आकर मिलती हैं। ब्लेयर के शब्दों में, “जिस सतह या रेखा के सहारे वायुराशियां पृथक् रहती हैं उसे वाताग्र कहते हैं।" जबकि ट्रिवार्था का कहना है कि “वाताग्र कोई रेखा नहीं होती अपितु पर्याप्त चौड़ाई वाले (5 से 75 किमी) ऐसे क्षेत्र होते हैं जहां से भिन्न स्वभाव वाली वायुराशियां आमने-सामने से आकर अभिसरण (Converge) करती हैं।'' इस प्रकार वाताग्र से आशय उस ढालू सीमा या सीमान्त से है जिसके सहारे दो विपरीत स्वभाव वाली हवायें मिलती हैं। वाताग्र न तो धरातल के ऊपर लम्बवत होता है और न ही धरातल के समानान्तर क्षैतिज होता है। बल्कि वह कुछ कोण पर झुका हुआ होता है। जलवायु विज्ञान में वाताग्र का अत्यधिक महत्व है, क्योंकि ये मौसम की विशिष्ट दशाओं को जन्म देते हैं, जिन्हें चक्रवात, प्रतिचक्रवात कहते हैं। इसीलिये वाताग्र को चक्रवातों व प्रतिचक्रवातों का पलना कहते हैं। (Fronts are cradle of cyclones and anticyclones...
