जलवायु Climate
जलवायु शब्द व्यापक अर्थ वाला है यह जल एवं वायु शब्दों से मिलकर बना है जल का अर्थ है वह सभी जल जो नमी या आद्रता या वर्षा के माध्यम से वायुमंडल की निचली परतों एवं भूतल पर वितरित है। जलवाष्प द्रव्य ठोस तीनों अवस्था में तापमान के लक्षणों के अनुसार पाया जाता है वायु से अर्थ है कि पृथ्वी के चारों और गैसों का जो घेरा फैला है उसके विविध लक्षण उनमें जलवाष्प विभिन्न रूपों से मिलने से एवं सूर्य ताप के परिवर्तनशील प्रभाव के अनुसार जो कुछ वायुमंडल एवं भूतल पर घटित होता है उसकी औसत दशाओं को जलवायु (क्लाइमेट) क्लाइमेट कहते हैं।
कोपेन के अनुसार जलवायु मौसम की औसत दशा का समन्वित अथवा सार स्वरूप है । मॉक हाउस के शब्दों में किसी वृहद क्षेत्र की वायुमंडलीय दशाओं के लंबे समय की औसत स्थिति का तथ्य पूर्ण वर्णन जलवायु कहलाता है। अतः किसी स्थान की जलवायु वहां के मौसम के तत्व (वायुमंडलीय दशाओं ) का सहयोग करती है
जलवायु को आंग्ल भाषा में (क्लाइमेट ) कहते हैं । इस शब्द की उत्पत्ति ग्रीक भाषा के 'Klima शब्द से हुई है। Klima का शाब्दिक अर्थ झुकाव अथवा डाल होता है। प्राचीन यूनानी विद्वानों ने ढाल से तात्पर्य पृथ्वी के विभिन्न अक्षांश पर जो कहा से लिया है उनका विश्वास था कि पृथ्वी के भूमध्य रेखा सैद रोहतक अक्षांशीय झुकाव के कारण हैं सूर्य की किरणों में तिरछापन उत्पन्न होता है जो भूतल पर विविध प्रकार के जलवायु प्रदेश निर्धारित करता है। जलवायु शब्द से किसी विस्तृत प्रदेश के दीर्घकालीन मौसम का आभास होता है। वस्तुतः जलवायु किसी विस्तृत प्रदेश के दीर्घकालीन मौसम के औसत को कहते हैं।

कोपे एवं डिलॉन्ग (koppe and Delong ) ने जलवायु को परिभाषित करते हुए लिखा है कि जलवायु लंबे समय की मौसमी दशाओं का सारांश अथवा संश्लिष्ट योग है अथवा जलवायु मौसम का संपूर्ण योग है।
जी, टी, ट्रीवर्था (G, T , Trewartha ) के शब्दों में जलवायु वायुमंडल की स्थाई दशा को कहते हैं। वस्तुतः दिन प्रतिदिन के मौसम की विविधता का संश्लेषण जलवायु कहलाता है तथा यह मौसमी औसत से बढ़कर है क्योंकि मौसमी एवं दैनिक परिवर्तन तथा गतिशील वायु मंडल विक्षोभों के विविध मौसमी पक्षों के मूल्यांकन के बिना जलवायु का अध्ययन नहीं किया जा सकता।''
Howard J, critchfield ने जलवायु को स्पष्ट करते हुए लिखा है एक लंबी कालावधी तथा पृथ्वी एवं वायुमंडल में ऊर्जा एवं पदार्थ के विनिमय की प्रक्रियाओं का प्रतिफल जलवायु है अतः जलवायु ना केवल सांख्यिकीय औसत से वर्कर है अभी तो इसके अंतर्गत उस्मा आद्रता तथा पवन संचलन जैसी वायुमंडलीय दशाओं का योग सम्मिलित है।
जलवायु की उपरोक्त परिभाषा में इसकी निम्न विशेषताएं दृष्टिगत होती हैं:1 जलवायु लंबी काल अवधि क्या मौसम की औसत दशाओं की परिचायक है।
2 जलवायु एक विस्तृत प्रदेश की वायुमंडलीय दशाओं का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं।
