पृथ्वी के समस्त जीव धारियों को जीवित रहने के लिए वायु की आवश्यकता होती है सौर मंडल के अन्य ग्रहों पर वायु के अभाव में ही जीवन नहीं पाया जाता है पृथ्वी के चारों ओर वायु की अदृश्य परत विद्यमान है जो एक लिफाफे की भांति पृथ्वी को घेरे हुए हैं यह अनेक गैसों का मिश्रण है जो कि रंगहीन गंध हिन स्वादहीन
पृथ्वी के चारों ओर फैले वायु के इस आवरण को ही वायुमंडल कहते हैं प्रसिद्ध जलवायु विज्ञान वेता फिंच व Trewartha के शब्दों में पृथ्वी को चारों ओर से खेलते हुए पृथ्वी ग्रह के अभिन्न अंग के रूप में विस्तृत गैसीय आवरण जो की कई सौ ऊंचाई तक फैला हुआ है वायुमंडल कहलाता है पृथ्वी की गुरुत्वाकर्षण शक्ति के कारण वायुमंडल सदैव इसके साथ चिपका रहता है अर्थात भूमि जल की भांति यह पृथ्वी का अभिन्न अंग है मानव के वायुमंडल विषय ज्ञान में निरंतर वृद्धि हो रही है आधुनिक काल में टोरिसली ,हैली , बर्जरन, फैरल , बॉयज़बेल्ट, मौलेवानफ आदि विद्वानों ने इसमें विशेष योगदान दिया वर्तमान में मौसम उपग्रहों से वायुमंडल की नवीनतम दिशाओं की जानकारी हमें प्रतिदिन मिल जाती है कंप्यूटर एवं संवेदनशील वाह अति परिष्कृत मौसम उपकरणों से वायुमंडल की जटिलताओं का अध्ययन और विश्लेषण आसान हो गया है।
