किसी स्थान के वायुमंडलीय दाब तापमान आद्रता में वर्षा पवन प्रवाह आदि की दशाओं को मौसम कहते हैं मौसम किसी स्थान विशेष की आपातकालीन दशाओं का योग है अन्य शब्दों में हम कह सकते हैं कि मौसम वायुमंडल की छड़ी अवस्था है मौसम दिन पतिदिन परिवर्तनशील रहता है इसमें वायुमंडल की निचली परतो में प्रतिक्षण की या मोटे तौर पर प्रतिदिन या उसके विशेष भाग की तथ्यात्मक दशा एवं उनके बदलते स्वरूप का वर्णन किया जाता है पश्चिमी यूरोप में प्रतिदिन मौसम परिवर्तित रहता है इसी प्रकार उत्तरी भारत में शीत काल में चक्रवात के प्रारंभ में मौसम उमस भरा गर्म मेघाच्छादित हो जाता है एवं प्रति योग चक्रवार्थी के दशक के कारण हुआ स्वच्छ खुला एवं दिन में सुहावना तथा रात्रि को पाले की आशंका वाला हो जाता है अतः जब भी हम किसी क्षेत्र स्थान विशेष समय दिन या सप्ताह में मानव को प्रभावित करने वाले वायुमंडलीय विशिष्ट दिशाओं का उल्लेख करते हैं तो वह वहां का उस काल का मौसम का मौसम कहलाता है मौसम की जानकारी हेतु ताप दाब आद्रता वर्षा  मेघ तथा हवा आदि का पूर्व अध्ययन आवश्यक है।

कोपे तथा डिलॉन्ग koppe and  delong के शब्दों में किसी विशेष स्थान और काल में वायुमंडल की अवस्था को मौसम कहते हैं।
जी.की .ट्रिवार्था ,  G.T. Trewartha  ने मौसम को परिभाषित करते हुए लिखा है कि किसी स्थान की अल्टो वादी वायुमंडलीय दशाओं के संपूर्ण योग को मौसम कहते हैं जो दैनिक अनुभव को प्रदर्शित करता है ।
क्रिचफिल्ड Critchfield के अनुसार मौसम को निम्न प्रकार से परिभाषित किया जा सकता है।
मौसम वायुमंडल की दिन-प्रतिदिन की दशा को कहते हैं और इसका संबंध तापमान तापमान आद्रता एवं वायु की गति में होने वाले अल्पकालिक परिवर्तनों से है मौसम की उत्पत्ति मुख्यतः उन प्रक्रम द्वारा होती है जो सोहर विक्रण के वितरण में वर्तमान विषमता को दूर कर संतुलन स्थापन का प्रयास करती है।

 हार्विज एवं ऑस्टिन के अनुसार किसी स्थान का मौसम वहां की किसी समय की सभी मौसमी दशाओं यथा तापमान वायुदाब वायु आद्रता वर्शन आकाश की दशा आदि के योग को कहते हैं।

 स्वेर्रे  पीटरसन Sverre Peterson ने मौसम के बारे में लिखा है कि वायुमंडल की क्षणिक तत्कालिक अथवा वायुमंडलीय दशाओं के आपातकालीन योग को मौसम कहते हैं।

  According to Critchfield Critchfield the weather can be defined as follows.

Thornweight's World Climate Classification (THORNTHWAITE'S CLASSIFICATION OF WORLD CLIMATES)  The famous American weatherman Thornwet has described climate classification by classifying it into two distinct parts. The first classification was presented in 1931 and 1933 and the second in 1948. Thornweight later revised its classification in 1955. The two classifications often look alike, but if we look closely, there is a difference between the two. In the classification made in 1933, only plants were considered as a special instrument of meteorology, with the help of which the elements of weather can be known. In the second classification in 1948, plants are considered as only natural means that keep the surface water from evaporating into the atmosphere.  Thornweight has considered the effectiveness of precipitation, thermal efficiency and seasonal distribution of rainfall in the global climate classification. वायुराशियों के  वाताग्र  या सीमान्त (FRONTS OF AIR MASSES) वाताग्र या सीमान्त वह लहरदार एवं विशेष ढाल वाला तल होता है, जहां कि आमने-सामने से दो भिन्न-भिन्न भौतिक लक्षणों वाली वायुराशियां आकर मिलती हैं। ब्लेयर के शब्दों में, “जिस सतह या रेखा के सहारे वायुराशियां पृथक् रहती हैं उसे वाताग्र कहते हैं।" जबकि ट्रिवार्था का कहना है कि “वाताग्र कोई रेखा नहीं होती अपितु पर्याप्त चौड़ाई वाले (5 से 75 किमी) ऐसे क्षेत्र होते हैं जहां से भिन्न स्वभाव वाली वायुराशियां आमने-सामने से आकर अभिसरण (Converge) करती हैं।'' इस प्रकार वाताग्र से आशय उस ढालू सीमा या सीमान्त से है जिसके सहारे दो विपरीत स्वभाव वाली हवायें मिलती हैं। वाताग्र न तो धरातल के ऊपर लम्बवत होता है और न ही धरातल के समानान्तर क्षैतिज होता है। बल्कि वह कुछ कोण पर झुका हुआ होता है। जलवायु विज्ञान में वाताग्र का अत्यधिक महत्व है, क्योंकि ये मौसम की विशिष्ट दशाओं को जन्म देते हैं, जिन्हें चक्रवात, प्रतिचक्रवात कहते हैं। इसीलिये वाताग्र को चक्रवातों व प्रतिचक्रवातों का पलना कहते हैं। (Fronts are cradle of cyclones and anticyclones...
